Digital Certificates - Security
- What could go wrong with a Digital ID?
- If someone gets a hold of your private key, they can
impersonate you as far as your CA would have authenticated yourself.
- Attacks on a Certification Authority could result in a
lost or compromised key.
- If it is lost, your ID is still valid if people
remember to use the CA's old key
- If it is compromised, forged IDs can be created,
and the CA may have to revoke all of its IDs. However, this
does not compromise any of your privacy.
